Aleksey Shuruev (Director/Founder)
Aleksey started climbing as a teenager, in the Caucasian Mountains near his hometown
of Krasnodar. Since then, he has had 20 years of climbing and mountaineering experience
in the Caucasus, Crimea, Yosemite ,U.S Rocky Mountains, New England and Alaska. A teacher by education,
he’s worked with children of all ages; for the past nine years, he’s developed
safety-conscious, well-rounded climbing and other outdoor programs for youngsters and
the young at heart.
His students compete at the regional and national levels.
Aleksey is a graduate of the Appalachian Mountain Club Leadership School and
is also CPR and first aid ceritfied. And he graduated from Kiev University with MA degree in History.
Kate Vorotnikova
Kate started climbing as a teenager in the Caucasian Mountains. After entering Moscow State
University, Biological Department, she joined Moscow University Mountaineering Club and since
then she has had more than 20 years of mountaineering and climbing experience in the Caucasus,
Crimea, Pamirs, Ala Tau, Tien Shan, and Himalayas. Her children Vasya (16) and Nadya (13) are
good and passionate climbers. They participated in lots of climbing competitions both in Russia
and the USA. Last year Vasya and Nadya competed at Nationals in Michigan and got the 4th and 3d
place, respectively. Kate's family loves hiking in Mt. Washington area and climbing in Rumney,
Pawtuckaway Park, Crow Hills, on Cathedral and White Horse Ledges.
Ilya Tatar
Ilya Tatar first started climbing (with Aleksey as his instructor) about four years ago. Since then he has been climbing and hiking throughout New England (Rumney, Pawtackaway, Hammond Pond,Cannon, White Horse, Cathedral, and others), Gunks in NY, and in Vermont.
Ilya is studying in Boston University towards a Bachelors degree in Computer Systems Engineering. He was a counselor in the summer rock climbing camp last year and is excited to come back this year as well. He really enjoys interacting with kids volunteering for IRCS in helping with the Ten Summits, Wilderness Fundamentals, and Junior Mountaineering trips, as well as with the weekly rock climbing classes.
Ned Fox
Ned Has been with our school since the beginning, first as a student and memeber of the climbing team. He successfully participated in a number of regional, divisional and national championships. While attanding our summer camp, Ned learned a lot of new skills, so he became a counselor and training, and then a counselor.
Working as a camp counselor, Ned proved to be an excellent role model for younger campers. His creativity and passion for working with kids makes him one of the best counselors and Tusday class and Wiamea team co-coaches. Ned enjoys reading, computer sciences and plaing the guitar.

Derek Locke
Derek was one of the fist students of our school. He is modest, a great role model and impossibly strong. He has been an awesome camp couselor and has really helped out with Waimea Climbing team. While on the Climbing team, he had many successful competition seasons.
Derek enjoys Playing the Guitar, reading and science.
