Ten Summits

The Ten Summits course is an exhilarating outdoor experience and the next step for students who successfully complete Wilderness Fundamentals and wish to continue their outdoor education. Two experienced mountaineers guide children ages 9-14 along trails to ten of New EnglandĘs most breathtaking summits. Along the way, every student learns the value of teamwork and camaraderie, while developing the physical and mental toughness necessary to reach a mountain peak.

DESCRIPTION:

Over ten weekend trips, students experience all the demands and challenges of undertaking an outdoor expedition. Drawing upon the skills learned in Wilderness Fundamentals, our students face their greatest challenge yet--summitting ten peaks in New England. They make their approach over well-maintained wilderness trails, climb into the alpine zone helping each other along the way, and then finally bask in the sense of accomplishment that comes from standing on a mountaintop and looking out at the spectacular views around them. The mountains we have climbed in the past include: Mt. Monadnock, Mt. Greylock, Mt. Lafayette, Cannon Mountain, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Chocorua, Mt. Jackson, Mt. Madison, Katahdin, and Mt. Washington. With each ascent, our climbers become well versed in the rigors and joys of mountaineering while learning the importance of working together to achieve a common goal. By the end of this course, each student will experience the way in which determination, commitment, confidence and teamwork can make any seemingly insurmountable obstacle an achievable goal.

Students who complete the Ten Summits course are awarded an International Rock Climbing School Certificate of Accomplishment. In addition, when a student has taken at least five of the ten trips, he or she is eligible to enroll in the challenging and exciting Junior Mountain Climber program, provided that all other requirements are met.
