CLIFFHANGER CLIMBING II:

This class is designed for boys and girls, ages 9-14, who have some experience rock climbing and are looking to broaden and enhance their skills. Modeled on the Cliffhanger Climbing I program, this class follows a three part schedule designed to strengthen each climberĘs individual skills while pushing the limits of his or her ability. By encouraging our students to strive for improvement, we hope to nurture and strengthen each climberĘs natural desire for excellence and success, not only in climbing, but in life as well.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

PART I (September-October): We begin with a general review of outdoor climbing on real rock at Hammond Pond. Observing and guiding our students as they work out the complexities of outdoor climbing, the IRCS instructors are able to develop a training regimen and create climbing objectives for each individual student. We emphasize and demonstrate the importance of concentration, technique and vision to each of our students by challenging them outdoors.

PART II (November-April): Once we have awakened each climber to his or her relative strengths and weaknesses, we proceed to six months of indoor training designed to expand each climberĘs repertoire and counter any specific shortcomings each student may have. Our indoor training is held at the Boston Rock Gym located in Woburn. The Boston Rock Gym is the largest indoor climbing facility in Massachusetts with 8,000 sq. feet of climbing surface and more than one hundred routes at all grades. The accessibility of such a variety of routes and grades enables us to work with each student on a variety of techniques more efficiently than we could outside. While indoors, we follow a general plan intended to build greater strength, endurance and flexibility while tailoring a program of specific climbing techniques to the needs of each climber.

PART III (May-June): The last two months of outdoor climbing is the culmination of all our previous work. Each student will push his or her limits to discover the depth of skill and talent each possesses. Several classes will be held at different local climbing areas, such as, College Rock in Hopkinton and the Wellesley Arches. By incorporating all previously learned skills and experience, each student will better understand his or her gifts and will enjoy the sense of having driven him or herself in order to expand the limits of his or abilities. So that finally, each student will know the pride and happiness that comes from striving for a worthy goal and making oneself greater in the process.

Every class is conducted in a fun-loving and noncompetitive environment. A climberĘs greatest competitor is him or herself, not others. However, students who are interested in taking part in Junior Competition Climbing Association events will have the opportunity to attend them along with our climbing team.
