The Waimea Climbing Team is a youth Climbing team, which has a successful history of achievements. We climb not only indoors, but outdoors as well. Our team members take part in the USCCA competitions, and often have excellent results. Currently, 2 of our team members (Andy Lamb, 9 and Francesca Metcalf, 10) are also on the US climbing team. They both placed first in the 2003 regionals. The team ages range from 6 to 15 years old. The older members train with the young ones, helping them out along the way. We have a great group of team parents on our side, as well. They all help out immensely, especially Charles Lamb, who is currently the official coordinator for our competition region, and Lee Fox.
We begin our instruction and training on real rock outdoors at Hammond Pond (located in Newton behind the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center). From the beginning of October, to the end of April, we practice at the Boston Rock Gym in Woburn. This is the largest indoor climbing facility in Massachusetts with 8,000 sq. feet of climbing surface and more than one hundred routes of all grades. From the beginning of May, to the end of June, we practice at Hammond Pond.
All of our team members must be members of the USCCA. For info on the membership, and other USCCA related topics, visit www.usclimbing.org.
Our primary goal is to create a cooperative group of teammates, who enjoy climbing together. Also, we want to teach and practice a variety of climbing techniques that are necessary for great performance at competitions.
In order to achieve these goals, we practice twice a week for about 2 hors per practice. We do stretching, conditioning, bouldering, endurance training, technical, speed, and lead climbing.
